Got Questions About Source2Sea?
Everything you need to know about Source2Sea, the expeditions, and how to get involved.
The mission
Source2Sea is a five-year multi-discipline expedition project, tracing five iconic rivers from source to sea — combining hiking, kayaking, and cycling along each route. Every mile is covered in aid of the MS Society UK, raising funds and awareness for people living with multiple sclerosis.
In 2023, my wife was diagnosed with MS. The MS Society was a vital source of support for our family during that period — and they continue to be. This project is my way of giving something back, and of channelling the experience into something meaningful. My wife's resilience is the driving force behind everything Source2Sea stands for.
All donations go directly to the MS Society UK, a charity funding research, providing support services, and campaigning for better care for the 150,000+ people living with MS in the UK. Donations are processed through GiveStar, a trusted fundraising platform.
I'm Sam — an ordinary person doing something a little extraordinary. Before Source2Sea, I'd never done anything like this. In 2024 I completely transformed my health, losing 17kg, quitting smoking, and building up the fitness to take on expeditions of this scale. Source2Sea grew out of that journey — and out of a desire to do something meaningful for my family and for everyone affected by MS.
The expeditions
The project covers five rivers across five years: the River Severn (UK, 368km — completed September 2025), the River Rhone (Switzerland to France, 825km — launching September 2026), the River Tagus (Spain and Portugal, 1,100km — 2027), and the River Rhine (Alps to North Sea, 1,380km — 2028). A fifth expedition is planned for 2029 — details coming soon.
Each expedition combines three disciplines — hiking, kayaking, and cycling — following the river from its source all the way to the sea. The terrain, distance, and conditions vary significantly between rivers, which is what makes each one its own challenge.
It varies depending on the river. The Severn took 8 days. The Rhone — more than double the distance and through far more demanding terrain — is planned across 19 days. Each expedition is different, and the timings reflect the true scale of the route.
I complete every segment of every expedition myself — every step hiked, every kilometre paddled, every mile cycled. A small logistics crew supports me between segments, handling kit transfers (a 14.5ft kayak and a bike don't exactly fit in a rucksack), but all the physical effort is mine. I carry everything I need for each individual segment under my own steam.
